Blissful Birthday, John Gilbert » Cleve’s Nook: Cleve Moler on Arithmetic and Computing

I’ve simply returned from a one-day workshop at U. C. Santa Barbara honoring John Gilbert on his seventieth birthday and his official retirement after 20 years on the UCSB school.

New Mexico

I’ve identified John since he was a youngster.

Within the late 1960’s, John’s father, Ed Gilbert, along with fellow mathematicians Don Morrison and Sto Bell, left their jobs at Sandia Nationwide Labs in Albuquerque and established the Pc Science Division on the College of New Mexico. Ed was particularly enthusiastic about undergraduate training and led the division to early adoption of Pascal and Unix within the curriculum.

In 1972, my spouse on the time, Nancy Martin, and I have been searching for a college the place we might each have school positions. UNM provided me a job within the Math Division and Nancy one in Pc Science. I stayed at UNM for 13 years, ultimately succeeding Morrison as Chairman of Pc Science.

After I first met the Gilbert household in ’72, each John and his youthful brother Erik have been undergrad college students at UNM. A yr later, each brothers have been admitted to grad faculty in Pc Science at Stanford. After getting their Ph.D.’s in CS at Stanford, Erik went on to cofound a software program firm that produced a dialect of Lisp and John joined the Pc Science Division at Cornell.

Xerox PARC

After a number of years at Cornell, John returned to California and the well-known Xerox Palo Alto Analysis Middle.

Someday round Christmas in 1988, Ian Duff, the British authority on sparse matrices, wished to go snowboarding within the Sierras. Iain organized with Gene Golub to provide a chat at Stanford. I used to be residing in Menlo Park on the time and went to the speak. So did John Gilbert and Rob Schreiber, from Hewlett Packard Analysis in Palo Alto.

After the speak, all people went for espresso at Tresidder, Stanford’s scholar union. Through the ensuing dialogue, John, Rob and I made a decision it was time to have sparse matrices in MATLAB. The primary new knowledge construction in MATLAB and its description resulted. See the hyperlinks at SIAM and MathWorks.

Friendship

Our collaboration on sparse matrices has led to a permanent friendship. Yearly, at SCxx, the Excessive Efficiency Computing convention in November, the three of us and Jack Dongarra get collectively. Right here we’re with Sven Hammarling from NAG, at SC17 in Denver.

UCSB

After a dozen years at PARC, John returned to tutorial life on the College of California close to Santa Barbara. Final Saturday, Aydin Buluc and Daniel Lokshtanov, two of John’s UCSB Ph. D. college students, organized the JRG70 workshop. Here’s a hyperlink to the Internet web page, together with the record of talks offered. hyperlink. It was the primary time since Tresidder that Iain, John, Rob and I’ve all been collectively.

Here’s a portrait of the JRG70 members. As standard, John is being modest; he is within the again row, in a burgundy sweater.
