Hello, I’m Skurhse, a trans girl and gopher aspirant. I fell in love with golang as quickly as I first opened the gopl e-book, and used the go tour and playground. At 34, I’ve managed to come back out at my job, and I’m working from pivoting out of a profession doing azure cloud infra, towards turning into a fulltime golang developer, which is one thing that I actually take pleasure in.
I’m right here as we speak to provide my testimony, within the unlucky actuality that I used to be banned from the gophers discord for stating that Pepe the frog is a hate image. That is apparently a controversial opinion, unbeknownst to me, and never a dialog I’d actually choose to be having in skilled programming areas. Within the #offtopic channel, the place folks the place spamming pepes, I said my argument respectfully, and responded to folks’s objections (there have been a ton). From there, I used to be dogpiled, and subsequently banned from the server with none warning or communication.
I don’t suppose the go neighborhood embracing pepe is a good suggestion. Matt Furie, Pepe’s creator, killed off the character for a motive. I actually don’t see why Pepe has place within the go neighborhood, which is meant to be inclusive. The absurdity compounds when you think about that now we have the Gopher to create emojiis and memes out of; illustrated by none aside from Renée French, within the lineage of Glenda.
I don’t actually know what say, aside from my account of what occurred. I’ve spoken to different trans people who find themselves gophers on discord, and so they shared with me privately that their experiences had been equally dangerous.
I’ll implore the neighborhood at massive to rethink the official hyperlink because the moderation there may be not consistent with the code of conduct. Indirectly no less than I hope that the neighborhood at massive can maintain them accountable. Just like the CoC says:
“What you say and do issues. Take accountability on your phrases and actions, together with their penalties, whether or not supposed or in any other case.”
