Beresford was born in 1932 in London. He obtained his bachelor’s diploma in arithmetic from Oxford in 1955.

Beresford got here to graduate college at Stanford in 1958. He had little or no cash and no place to reside. At first, he slept within the math college girls’s lounge and showered within the gymnasium. Luckily, after two quarters, the maths made him a instructing assistant, and he was in a position to transfer out of the lounge.
